Is an ageing population necessarily a bad thing?

Source: www.un.org Note: This article is just for brainstorming and getting ideas. It is not a proper GP essay! In developed nations, an increasing proportion of senior citizens in their population has been observed. This phenomenon is known as ageing population which poses significant challenges to their economy. While the working population does not experience growth in the same ratio with the working population, the burden of supporting larger number of elderly people lies on the smaller number of working people. In other words, government's expenditure on supporting elderly population including social security and medical care, takes up a sizable proportion of country's GDP. This affects the nation's expenditure on other sectors such as education, infrastructure development, and the like. However, whether ageing population is really a bad thing or not requires careful examination.

Remuneration is the sole motivating factor in today’s workplace. Discuss.

Image source: www.dreamstime.com Motivation to work is closely tied up with why people work. People work for a number of reasons such as to earn monetary rewards, gain satisfaction from accomplishment, maintain social status, remain engaged in a worthwhile pursuit instead of sitting idle, become involved or associated with something, and so on. While every person's reason to work might be slightly different from others, it usually consists of a few, if not all, among the ones discussed above. Therefore, remuneration is not the only source of motivation in today's workplace. In fact, the motivation factors have increased along with the increase in people's motive to work and are getting increasingly complex to understand.

Do we really need to pray God?

(Note: This opinion essay is not targeted for General Paper format although you can still benefit from it on reasoning and argumentation. ) Before discussing upon whether we need to pray God or not, we need to be sure whether God exists or not. If God doesn't exist, then there's no question whether we should pray Him or not. But until now, we have no evidence to determine with certainty the existence or the non-existence of God. In this state of uncertainty and ignorance, I have assumed that the God exists and thus argued accordingly.

Is anger good or bad in your opinion?

(Note: This opinion essay is not targeted for General Paper format although you can still benefit from it on reasoning and argumentation.) (Image courtesy: www.socialjunk.net ) Right from my childhood I have heard of people criticizing anger just as they criticize other traits like pride, greed, lust, etc. People often have been using the argument "getting angry is bad" to shut up other people and to win them over in the arguments. However, I now have a changed perspective on this matter. I now see the virtue of not being angry a distant myth.

A Sample Book Review of "Great Expectations"

How would you feel if you wake up one day to find out someone who is willing to spend a lot of money to make a gentleman out of you? And how would you feel if that person who wants to remain anonymous initially, turns out to be a convict whom you once met in your childhood? “Great Expectations”, a novel by famous English writer Charles Dickens, has a similar story. With his best-known books David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities; Charles Dickens is back again with the theme of a youth’s discovery of the realities of life in Great Expectations. Pip, whose parents died when he was a child, used to live with his sister and her husband, in a small village. He encounters a runaway convict when, one day, he was sitting next to the graves of his parents in the graveyard. We have been taught the virtues like honesty, obedience, calm temperament and so on since our childhood. “Honesty is the best policy” was taught over and over again during our primary school years. However, what is "honesty" actually? Does it imply giving true replies to everyone who interrogates us? Does it imply we should work in good faith when we do something for ourselves and others? Now,  after deciding what honesty is, can we be sure that it will be always good? Will honesty always result in positive consequences? How far should one go for the sake of honesty?  Can we be honest with everyone we know or should we choose whom to be honest with? These are the serious questions we need to analyze before preaching "honesty" as a virtue and deciding whether it is the best policy.
