Product are the desirable outcomes of our work whereas the by-products are undesirable outcomes of
our work. Here our product that humans desirably pursued are prosperity and development. The by-products that come together are the natural disasters. So, are the natural disasters the outcomes of our activities directed towards prosperity and development?
Below are the demonstrations of arguments for and against the motion, with a balanced conclusion.
On the motion:
1) Drought and deluge have been resulted from massive clearance of forests. The deforestation has caused the climate to change into undesirable form. The weather is now less predictable and generally the global temperature is rising, which is known popularly as the global warming. The phenomenon of global warming, is not only related to deforestation but in general to all the human activities that result in carbon emission. The examples of these activities that result in carbon generation include operation of factories, vehicles, commercial farming of animals and plants, and so on. All of these activities have some negative consequences in the environment which potentially results or promotes natural disasters like landslides, drought, deluge, soil erosion, acid rain and so on.
2) Landslides and soil erosion are directly the results of our crave for development, especially in cultivation or farming in the hilly areas. Deforestation is the first necessary step in this process, which is already proven to have many calamitous consequences. Further development of land such as tilling and making arable make the land more vulnerable for landslides and soil erosion. Therefore, it is fair to claim that natural disasters are sometimes the consequences of human's zeal for development.
3) Natural catastrophes are elevated or their consequences become more disastrous when human's desire for prosperity results in negligence and poor planning. For instance, the earthquake is a natural calamity which often happens naturally. However, because of rampant urbanisation, a quest for prosperity and development, the consequences were noticed to have been severe in many incidences. The April 25, 2015 earthquake of Nepal is an exemplary event.

1) Natural disasters occurred long ago even when there was no development at all. Disasters like earthquake, flood, landslides date back to thousand of years. Earthquake is the outcome of the disturbance or imbalance in the tectonic plates beneath the earth which is independent of human activities. Likewise, fall of meteorites, storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc are some of the examples of natural disasters that occur for purely natural reasons.
Conclusion:
While some human activities might induce or promote natural disasters, they do not have causal link to some other forms of natural disasters that have been naturally occurring since the dawn of the earth. Indeed there is need for humans to realise the limit of the earth and the negative consequences of their activities while craving for prosperity and development. However, claiming natural disasters as the by-product of human's desire for prosperity and development might not be entirely true.
